How Long Does It Take A Perth Patio Builder To Complete Your Patio?

One of the frequent questions Perth patio builders hear is “How long will it be when you complete my patio?”

The answer will surprise most Perth homeowners and landlords.

You see, once you accept the quote from your chosen Perth patio builder and pay the deposit, the patio builder will need to complete the patio design drawings and submit them to the relevant shire for approval.

Perth patio builder complete project time

Each WA shire council has a different approval period. Some are super quick to approve the Perth patio design for your home within one week, and others can take up to four weeks.

Being a government body – you cannot rush them. Each shire has their own way of processing the patio design applications. They will ensure that the design fits within your site building envelope and that the looks structurally sound.  Often they will be familiar with your chosen Perth patio builder and will know they produce solid designs.

After the plans have been approved, your local Perth patio builder will order the materials and make the triangular beams and other customised supports for patio roofing materials.

Usually, your patio builder will now request another progress payment to cover their material costs and labour so far.

Your Perth patio builder will then deliver with a truck all the completed beams, supports and patio roofing material including any colorbond steel and polycarbonate plastic sheets to your home or investment property.

Then just like meccano, your Perth patio builder will arrive with a small team (2-4 people) to assemble your new patio.

The assembly period varies, of course, depending on the size and complexity of your patio design. Usually it will take them one day for a very small patio, up to 5 days for a large, more complex one.

So to answer your initial question – it depends. However, your Perth patio builder will give you a close estimate. Usually from the time you pay the deposit, anytime between 3 weeks to 8 weeks.

If you would like to have the patio completed ready for an important birthday or other event, please take the time required into consideration.  Book your patio builder early.

Maximising Your Perth Patio Roofing Design

Whilst colorbond metal roof sheets are extremely durable and UV safe, their use can result in a patio area that is a little dark.

That’s why many Perth patio designs incorporate plastic sheeting (polycarbonate) to improve lighting and add style to the patio area.

Certainly for areas further south of Perth like Bunbury, Busselton, Albany, etc where the temperature can be a little cooler it’s a good idea to consider patio roofing to let in sun, warmth and natural light.

Whether your home is north or south of the river choosing the roofing materials for your new Perth patio is an important design decision.

And of course, you can use plastic sheeting entirely, i.e. with no colorbond metal sheets.

Outdoor patios Perth roofing sheeting

Popular sheeting products like Suntuf SolarSmart by Palram, and Laserlite 3000 by Bayer Material Science come in different colours with varying heat and light transmission properties.

TIP: Ask your Perth patio builder for what they recommend when they come out to give you a quote on your new Perth patio project.

You will need to choose:

  • The colour of the plastic roof sheeting
  • The pattern (greco or corrugated)
  • The transparency (usually darker to block more light and heat)

By using plastic sheeting in your Perth patio design, you will be able to let in more light in any area or corner that requires it.

For example, if you are planning a patio wider than 3 metres, it’s a good idea to add one row of plastic sheeting along the space closest to your house (eaves).

In other words, you can mix in plastic sheeting with colorbond sheets to gain a good compromise between UV protection, durability and light transmission.

Hmmm, Which Patio Roof Material Do I Choose?

With outdoor living spaces an essential part of Aussie culture and housing design, patios are hugely popular. And the variety of patio designs is vast.

For example, your choice of patio roofing impacts on the feel and function of your patio. You can choose metal sheeting like Colorbond steel, or one of the many polycarbonate plastic sheeting options.

Perth Patio Roofing Options

Opaque patio roofing, using ColorBond sheeting and other options, is ideal protection from the heat. With an opaque roof  your patio becomes a cool, shady retreat.  This is important in hot areas like Perth.

And in cooler areas (further south) – it’s a good idea to consider an amount of transparent patio roofing to let in sun and warmth and natural light.

With modern polycarbonate materials it’s possible to choose patio roofing with a mix of benefits. These plastic sheets are durable, reflective and come with a range of colours and qualities. You can select the amount of light and heat you’d like your roof to transmit or reflect.

In the Perth climate, for example, you might want your roof to let in plenty of light but not too much heat. Have a look at these two products, and you’ll see how this can be done:

  • Suntuf SolarSmart by Palram – comes corrugated or Greca (squared) in different colours with varying heat and light transmission properties.
  • Laserlite 3000 by Bayer Material Science – comes corrugated or Greca (squared) in different colours with varying heat and light transmission properties as well.

Ask your patio builder to show you their roofing products and explain the differences between them.

Patio Roof Colours – ColorBond Steel

What colours does patio roof material come in? Well, if you’ve already spoken to a patio builder, then most of them work with a range of standard metal sheet colours made by BlueScope Steel called the ColorBond range.

As of January 2013, Colorbond colours come in four ranges: Standard, Ultra, Stainless and Fencing.

You can check out this website http://www.colorbondcolours.com/ to see the current ColorBond range for patio roofs and backyard fences.

You’ll need to remember a couple of things;

1) The colour you see on your computer screen will be different to the actual colour of the steel material, so only use what you see on the ColorBond website as a guide

2) Not the entire range of colours will be available from a particular local Perth patio builder, they will usually only offer 8-12 colours.

When it comes to choosing the colour for your outdoor patio roof it’s best to go with something that will match (or closely) match your existing home colour scheme (such as roof tile colour, brick wall colour, gutter colour, etc) as well as being modern. Lighter ColorBond patio roof sheeting will also fade less (or be not as noticeable) as dark colours.

How about requesting a quote from this website from a local patio builder? They should provide you with a ColorBond colour guide when they visit you (or pick up a ColorBond guide from a local paint shop).

Patio Roof Materials – Just What Is ColorBond Steel?

Colorbond® steel is used in many Perth patio constructions as well as in other backyard areas and on roofs. So what is Colorbond? Why is it so popular for patio roofs?

One of the main reasons is that is made by a large Australian company – BlueScope Steel (a spin off from BHP).

Here’s what BlueScope Steel say about their Colorbond product…

1. Made for Australian conditions

COLORBOND® steel has been rigorously tested in some of Australia’s harshest climatic conditions for over 40 years. So whether your roof or walls, gutters, fence or garage doors are made from COLORBOND® steel, you can be sure its great Aussie looks will last.

2. A wide range of colours to mix & match

From light to dark, delicate to deep, elegant to lively, the standard COLORBOND® steel range includes 20 colours. This gives you the scope to acheive the look you want to suit your house style and the surroundings.

3. Thermal efficency for year-round comfort

COLORBOND® steel cools down fast when the sun sets, so less heat is radiated into your home. In winter the same roof, combined with insulation, helps keep the warmth in. Also every colour in the standard COLORBOND® steel range features Thermatech® solar reflectance technology to reflect more of the sun’s heat in summer. So your home is more energy efficient and can help reduce your cooling and energy costs.

4. An inspiration for innovative home designs

Because steel is lightweight yet extremely strong, it is ideal for today’s modern home designs. These could feature high ceilings, open-plan layouts, dramatic wall lines and stylish roofs, whether curved, flat or pitched.

5. Made and backed by Australian owned BlueScope Steel

COLORBOND® steel is strong and durable. It’s made in Australia for Australia and warranted for a range of applications by BlueScope Steel.

Outdoor Patios – Ideal Sun Protection Solution

With the powerful UV rays causing havoc on our skins, we have known for many years about the importance of sun protection. If you however, love spending summer days outdoors, and enjoy those weekend family BBQ’s, then what options do you have? Well, aside from the normal sun block, hat and UV protective sunglasses, you can also go the extra mile and build a special outdoor patio for your home.

With an outdoor patio that offers an advanced UV cover, such as the Colorbond product, you can now enjoy endless hours outdoors. The kids can play safely, and you can eat, read or simply relax outdoors, without needing to worry about constant exposure from UV rays.

Aside from the sun protection element, an outdoor patio offers you a brilliant entertainment area that is ideal for any party, BBQ, brunch, or other event as it is protected from the harsh elements and offers a large open space for party tables and more.

The extra living space you get from an outdoor patio that is completely covered with a protective ceiling solution including Solar Span, Suntuf Solar Smart or the top of the line Colorbond product, means that you basically get an extra room on your home, where can enjoy being outdoors, and fully protected from the harsh UV rays of the sun.
